Judge of The Court of Justice

The Court of Justice was established in 1952 and has its seat in Luxembourg.  The Court of Justice consists of one judge from each EU Member State.  The post of UK judge to the Court of Justice will fall vacant on 6 October 2012.  Her Majesty’s Government invites applications from candidates possessing the necessary qualifications and expertise for this important and prestigious judicial appointment.
 
In accordance with Article 253 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, judges of the Court of Justice are to be chosen “from persons whose independence is beyond doubt and who possess the qualifications required for appointment to the highest judicial offices in their respective countries, or who are juris consults of recognised competence.”  Judges of the Court of Justice are appointed by common accord of the governments of the EU Member States for a renewable term of 6 years.
 
The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate a good operational level of French, as the Court’s deliberations are not interpreted. Further details of the qualities required for the post are included in the further information note for applicants.
 
The Government will select the appointment based on merit and in accordance with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010.
